In the 1860s coffee first came to this region of Mexico when a group of French families set up plantations in Malinal, today there are still trees standing which date back more than 100 years. Within 30 years cooperatives had formed in the region with their farming members producing roughly 300 hectares of land.

Currently there are 260 producers, most of them small growers with approximately 2-3 hectares per family. More than 50% of all Malians coffee is grown at altitudes above 1000m, and the majority of the coffee produced is made up Typica, Caturra, and Bourbon varieties. James Kosalos of San Cristobal Coffees (the exporter of this specific coffee) created a system of tracking specific lots directly from the farm, to the patio where the coffee is dried, all the way through to the seller.

The unique system is to ensure full traceability of the lot. This sweet natural process coffee is available online and in store and features notes of strawberry, white grape, and vanilla.
